We eat foods that are good for our fitness, weight loss and nutrition goals, but the right kinds of food can do a whole lot more for our bodies. We spoke with Jessica Crandall, registered dietician, certified Diabetes educator and national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, for some foods to consider adding to your diet for specific reasons.

For your heart health

Fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans

Why

Most Americans are only getting 11 grams of fiber per day, while the goal is 25 to 35, says Crandall. The fix? Shoot for 3 to 5 cups of fruit or veggies a day by adding a cup or two to each meal and snacking throughout the day.

For your hair and nails

Lean meats, beans and nuts

Why

Healthy fats and adequate protein are essential for hair and nail health and growth.

"One ounce of nuts is a great way to get healthy snacking through the day, while also providing you with nutritional benefits to support your hair and nails," says Crandall.

For your mood

Dairy

Why

Healthy carbohydrates, known as complex carbohydrates, will give your body the energy it needs, without the blood sugar crash. Focus on dairy -- along with fruits, whole grains and beans -- and make sure you adhere to adequate meal times, which means eating approximately every four to six hours while awake to keep your energy levels stable.
