Baton Rouge, LA
Louisiana State University is moving on without dismissed defensive back Tyrann Mathieu.
"I certainly am rooting for Tyrann," LSU coach Les Miles said. "But I'm not focused on that. I've got games to play and I've got 104 guys I have to be ready for. I know that this is a very key time in his life and I hope the decisions that he makes are in the best interest for the long term."
The Tigers will face North Texas in their Sept. 1 season opener.
Last week, the Tigers dismissed Mathieu for a violation of team rules, which LSU officials did not specify.
Mathieu's dismissal has left the Tigers without their most explosive defensive player. Last year, he recorded 76 tackles, one and a half sacks, two interceptions and forced six fumbles with five fumble recoveries.
He was also the most explosive special teams player in America with two punt returns for a touchdown.
Recently, it was reported that Mathieu, known as "Honey Badger" has entered former NBA star John Lucas' Treatment and Recovery center and there is no timeline in his return to the academics and sport.
"Tyrann is focused on addressing his issues with Mr. Lucas," said Tyrone Mathieu, Tyrann's uncle. "Tyrann is working on discipline, maturity and character. He's making life adjustments."
Miles said he is ready to help the defensive back in any way but said he is focused on the other players on the Tigers' roster.
"I just think that I want to focus on other things and not those pieces," said Miles, who will look into freshmen Kavahra Holmes, Jalen Mills and Jalen Collins to fill the void left by Mathieu.
"I think that when we walk out there in the first game, I think you'll find out that we'll have a guy there that can really play," Miles said.
Miles will bank on junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger to carry the offensive load for the team. Mettenberger recently threw five touchdowns during LSU's most recent scrimmage.
"I think that we're throwing it pretty well out there," Miles said.
