Fitzgerald Cecilio
Houston, TX
Warren Creavalle and Giles Barnes scored their first career MLS goals to help the Houston Dynamo extend their home unbeaten streak to 33 games with a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps at BBVA Compass Stadium.
With the victory, the Dynamo (2-1-0) need just a win to tie Real Salt Lake's all-time home unbeaten streak record.
Darren Mattocks opened scoring for the Whitecaps in the 36th minute. He stumbled at the top of the box going past Eric Brunner but recovered enough to blast home a fantastic curling strike from 20 yards out.
However, Barnes pulled Houston even with a header that capped a beautiful teamwork in the 55th minute.
Will Bruin and Kofi Sarkodie combined in a play that gave midfielder Ricardo Clark enough room to serve up his first MLS assist since 2009.
Clark curled a ball to the top of the six-yard box and Barnes headed it across Whitecaps goalkeeper Joe Cannon for his first MLS goal.
Seven minutes later, Creavalle put the Dynamo ahead when he poked home a corner by Brad Davis.
The Whitecaps nearly pulled even late in the match, but Mattocks' curling attempt hit the side netting while a free kick from Camilo hit the post in the 81st minute.
The loss was the first for the Whitecaps (2-1-0), leaving Montreal as the only MLS team with a perfect record.
Houston has a chance to tie Real Salt Lake's unbeaten streak of 34 next Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes, while Vancouver travel to Southern California to take on Chivas USA.
